Frequently asked questions about surplus charging with our EV charger
Which wallbox can I use to charge with excess PV power?
To charge your car with excess solar power, you need a smart wallbox with a solar surplus charging function. With our home chargers, you can set up and use this function in the Click2Charge app.
You can find a detailed wallbox guide on our blog.
What components do I need for charging with excess PV power?
You need a PV system and a DaheimLader wallbox (Smart PRO or Touch PRO), as well as our free wallbox app, Click2Charge.
To charge your PV system, you enter your system details and can also integrate your inverter to collect real-time data. If you own a Poweropti from Powerfox, you can integrate that as well.
How does the wallbox communicate with the PV system?
You can easily integrate your inverter into our wallbox app. The inverter transmits the power data to the app, allowing your DaheimLader wallbox to start and stop the charging process whenever sufficient solar energy is available.
Optionally, you can purchase a smart energy meter (powerfox opti). The Powerfox Opti continuously monitors the electricity purchased and sold by your electricity meter and transmits the relevant data via Wi-Fi to the Click2Charge app. The wallbox can then use the real-time consumption data from the Powerfox Opti. Based on this information, the charging power can be automatically and precisely controlled.
How big does my solar power system need to be to charge my car?
It depends on your car, your home electricity consumption, and your mileage. With a smaller PV system, you could combine your PV power with grid electricity to charge your car with solar energy. In our Click2Charge wallbox app, you can configure whether your home charger should charge your car with pure solar energy or with solar + grid electricity.
Can I charge my electric car with a mini PV system?
Yes, you can generally charge your electric car with a mini-PV system. However, it's important to note that mini-PV systems typically only generate a limited amount of electricity. This means they might not provide enough power to charge your electric car quickly and fully. With our Click2Charge app, you can combine PV power with grid electricity to ensure you have enough power to charge your vehicle.
